My idea for this weekly upload was the heavy consumerism surrounded around shops and stores to attract guests in walking into their business. I was driving down University Avenue and was shocked by how many overlapping signs and words they used to attract someone passing by on this awfully busy street, deciding to take a short walk myself and capture what signs caught my eye with giant words and bright color schemes. It also really made me realize how heavy an influence graphic design has in our society, using bright colors on billboards and signs of their logo that leads to the shop and catches your eye when driving down the busy road full of continuous cars from both directions. I also tried to capture some signs in the Bay Park Mall with their crazy deals written on signs that lure you into the store with discounts that cause you to spend more money on things you never originally needed. This plan fell through quickly as many people gave me weird stares and security was staring me down as well so I gave up on that idea quickly which you can see clearly within my contact sheet. All in all, I found this week’s upload a learning process of how businesses make themselves stand out with eye-catching pictures and “quirky” phrases on just this street alone.
